New Zealand Rugby - Teaming up with Workride

Across Aotearoa, rugby is more than a sport - it’s part of the fabric of our communities. The same spirit of teamwork, resilience, and leadership that defines rugby on the field also shapes the way New Zealand Rugby (NZR) supports its people off it.

Through a partnership with Workride, New Zealand Rugby is helping staff acquire bikes, or e-bikes for their daily commute - supporting healthier habits, sustainable travel, and a positive workplace culture.

Elite level sport is all about the top 1%, but NZR recognises the value of their organisatoin is bigger than that, it’s about supporting their kaimahi to create positive new habits. Be that someone jumping on a bike for the first time, and someone rediscovering the joy of biking!

Cycling to work is one of the simplest ways employees can incorporate movement into their day, improve wellbeing, and reduce the environmental impact of commuting. That’s where Workride comes in - New Zealand’s Ride to Work Benefit Progam. Enabling employees to cost offest 32-63% on any bike or e-bike for commuting, spreading the cost via a 12 month pre-tax salary sacrifice.

How has it been working with Workride?

“From initial engagement through to programme launch, their professionalism, responsiveness and clarity consistently stood out. Aidan and the Workride team created a space where every question was welcomed and thoughtfully addressed. When the focus is an initiative delivering positive outcomes for people and the planet, having an aligned team who genuinely cares makes all the difference.

We asked Rebbecca how easy it was to roll-out the Workride program?

“Naturally, there were a few questions up front about how it might impact the wider organisation, different teams, and our existing processes - as you’d expect with any new initiative. Once we’d worked through those and everyone was clear on what it meant for them, the rollout moved really quickly. It ended up being a smooth and straightforward experience.”

Supporting staff and organisational goals

For New Zealand Rugby, initiatives like Workride sit naturally alongside the organisation’s wider commitment to looking after its people and strengthening the communities connected to the game.

NZR’s organisational strategy places a strong emphasis on building a thriving rugby ecosystem across Aotearoa - from players and fans through to the people who help run the game behind the scenes. Supporting staff wellbeing and creating a positive workplace environment are key parts of that ambition, alongside ensuring rugby continues to have a positive impact on New Zealand communities.

Workride provides a practical way to bring those goals to life. By helping staff access bikes and e-bikes through their workplace, NZR is making it easier for employees to build movement into their day, reduce the environmental footprint of their commute, and enjoy the simple benefits of riding.

Importantly, it achieves this without creating additional complexity for the organisation. The programme is cost neutral for employers, and allows employees to choose a bike from any retailer, while Workride manages the compliance and administration behind the scenes.

For NZ Rugby, the result is a wellbeing initiative that reflects the same values the sport is built on — supporting people, strengthening communities, and leading by example.

And for other organisations across Aotearoa looking to support healthier staff and more sustainable travel, Workride offers a simple way to get started.
