Port Nelson - Pedaling change with Workride
As Te Tauihu’s vital maritime gateway, Port Nelson plays a central role in keeping goods, people, and industry connected -across land and sea. From global trade to local resilience, this is an organisation focused on the future. But Port Nelson knows that driving long-term sustainability doesn’t stop at the shoreline. That’s why they’ve turned their attention to something much closer to home: the daily commute.
Earlier in 2025, Port Nelson partnered with Workride to support employees to switch to biking, creating a cleaner, healthier alternative to driving and helping to reduce their commuting emissions. Workide enables employees to exchange part of their pre tax pay for a bike, e-bike or e-scooter, leading to a cost offset (saving) between 32-63%, no small amount. It’s been a win-win move, backed by great feedback from across the team.
We caught up with Jacqui McLeod, People Experience Manager, Port Nelson, to hear their experience of rolling out Workride and the first hand impact for employees!
What has your experience been with Workride?
“Our experience with Workride has been great, the portal is user friendly and the resources are super helpful.”
Jacqui McLeod, People Experience Advisor, Port Nelson
What do you think makes Workride a great option for people considering a bike?
“For employees, by not having any up front cost it essentially looks and feels like an interest free loan. Combine that with the cost offset and it become a massive incentive. It’s helping our team upgrade or buy their first bike.”
Where’s your favorite place to ride?
“My favorite bike ride is the section of the Great Taste Trail from Motueka to Kaiteriteri in Tasman. It is a stunning part of the world, relatively flat, quiet trails and of course it’s in the name… lots of great places to stop for a snack or two!”
