Why Heartland partnered with Workride
Heartland Bank has always done things a little differently. It's a bank that provides practical and appealing specialist banking products to enable better lives for New Zealanders and Australians. Its sustainability strategy is built on three pillars: Environment, People and Financial Wellbeing, with the aim of “creating long-term value for its customers, people, communities and shareholders".
That approach shows up in how Heartland treats its own team. Heartland is an accredited Living Wage Employer, holds the Rainbow Tick, and is a Hearing Accredited Workplace. It also runs a Rangatahi Advisory Board so younger staff get a real say in how the business is led.
Within this strategy, Heartland has already achieved its first emissions reduction target and subsequently set a second, to reduce its absolute operational emissions from its New Zealand-based operations by 37.8% by FY30 from the FY25 base year, including an absolute reduction of scope 1 and 2 emissions by 37.8% from the FY25 base year. Workride fits neatly within all three pillars. Staff can get a bike, e-bike or scooter through pre-tax salary sacrifice, which makes lower-emission commuting more affordable. It's a benefit that supports people's financial wellbeing and their health, and it cuts transport emissions, with very little admin for the employer.
